Purbaya Took Mysterious Call Then Lost His Finance Minister Job
Jakarta. Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa was still attending a parliamentary meeting in his capacity as finance minister on Monday, just hours before President Prabowo Subianto replaced him with his deputy, Suahasil Nazara, in an abrupt cabinet reshuffle on Monday.
He attended a working meeting with members of the Regional Representative Council (DPD) at the parliament complex in Jakarta earlier in the day, reported Kompas. The meeting had been scheduled to run until 3 p.m.
There had been no public indication from Purbaya during the meeting that he was about to leave the cabinet.
At one point, however, Purbaya received a phone call and stepped away from the proceedings.
“Hello, Sir. I'm still at the DPD,” Purbaya was heard saying on his cellphone.
Shortly afterward, he left the parliament complex.
Purbaya was not seen at the State Palace when Prabowo swore in Suahasil as the new finance minister later Monday.
Suahasil, who had served as deputy finance minister since 2019, said he himself had only been informed of his promotion that morning.
“I was informed this morning and asked to prepare for the inauguration this afternoon,” Suahasil said at the palace.
“This is, of course, an expression of the trust placed in me by the president and the country. I am grateful for that trust, and I hope I can carry out the responsibility entrusted to me by the president,” he added.
Prabowo formally appointed Suahasil under a presidential decree dismissing Purbaya and naming his successor for the remainder of the 2024-2029 cabinet term.
Purbaya had served as finance minister for about a year after replacing Sri Mulyani Indrawati in September 2025.
