Jakarta. Indonesia spent Rp 574.2 trillion ($32.07 billion)  on education through September 2026, accounting for 21.6% of total state spending of Rp 2,660.5 trillion, Finance Deputy Minister Suahasil Nazara said on Friday.

The education budget funded student assistance, teacher and lecturer salaries and allowances, free nutritious meals for schoolchildren, and the operation and improvement of educational facilities, Suahasil said at the Finance Ministry’s October edition of its APBN KiTa press conference in Jakarta.

“The education budget stands at Rp 574.2 trillion,” Suahasil said.

The funding supports several government programs, including the Program Indonesia Pintar (PIP), which provides financial assistance to school students; the Kartu Indonesia Pintar Kuliah (KIP Kuliah), which helps students cover the cost of higher education; and the free meal program (MBG).

The allocation also covers salaries and allowances for teachers, lecturers and other education personnel, including both civil servants and non-civil servants. Funding for school operations, higher education institutions and early childhood education centers is provided through various operational assistance programs.

Suahasil said education spending was distributed through multiple channels, including central government expenditure, transfers to regional governments and financing allocations.

“Some funds are disbursed through central government expenditure, some through transfers to regional governments, and some through financing,” he said.

The arrangement allows central and regional governments to combine funding from the state budget (APBN) with locally generated revenue to meet education needs.

“That is why I always say that the APBN and regional budgets (APBD) are one integrated whole,” Suahasil said.

Total state spending reached Rp 2,660.5 trillion as of September, equivalent to 69.2% of the full-year budget allocation. Education spending accounted for approximately 21.58% of the total expenditure realized during the period.
