Prabowo Ally Glenny Kairupan Appointed as Garuda Indonesia CEO
Jakarta. Indonesia’s national airline Garuda Indonesia on Wednesday appointed Glenny H. Kairupan as its new chief executive officer, replacing Wamildan Tsani Panjaitan less than a year after his tenure began.
The decision was made during an extraordinary shareholders’ meeting, marking another leadership change at the flag carrier amid ongoing efforts to stabilize operations and restore profitability.
Glenny, a close associate of President Prabowo Subianto, previously served as one of Garuda’s commissioners since August 2024. He has also held positions in defense company Teknologi Militer Indonesia and serves on the Advisory Board of the Gerindra Party, which is led by Prabowo.
Born in 1949, Glenny is also a classmate of Prabowo from the Indonesian Military Academy, where both trained in the early 1970s.
The appointment replaces Wamildan, who had led the airline since November 2024, a period marked by post-pandemic restructuring and financial recovery initiatives.
In addition to naming Glenny as CEO, the meeting also approved several new appointments, including Thomas Sugiarto Oentoro as Deputy CEO and Balagopal Kunduvara as Director of Finance and Risk Management.
