Jakarta. A sharp spike in plastic prices, surging as much as 30–50% nationwide since March, has raised fresh concerns over supply chain pressures, but Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung urged residents to stay calm, saying food inflation in the capital remains under control.

“Regarding some price increases, in Jakarta, as of today, we monitor daily, and inflation is still well maintained,” Pramono told reporters at Pasar Gardu Asem in Central Jakarta on Monday.

The price shock comes as global supply disruptions ripple into Indonesia’s domestic market. Data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) showed Indonesia imported $873.2 million worth of plastic products (HS 39) in February 2026, underscoring the country’s heavy reliance on external supply. China accounted for the largest share at $380.1 million, followed by Thailand at $82.7 million and South Korea at $66.7 million.

Indonesia still depends on imports for around 60% of its plastic raw materials, making domestic prices highly sensitive to global shocks, particularly as conflict in the Middle East disrupts supply chains.

Despite rising plastic costs, Pramono said staple food prices in Jakarta have remained stable, supported by ongoing market operations.

“There is no need for panic buying because all essential goods are more than sufficiently stocked,” he said.

Earlier, Trade Minister Budi Santoso acknowledged the recent increase in plastic prices, which has drawn complaints from businesses and consumers alike. He attributed the surge primarily to global factors, especially disruptions in the supply of naphtha, a key raw material in plastic production.

Indonesia, he noted, still relies heavily on naphtha imports, particularly from the Middle East, where ongoing geopolitical tensions have tightened supply and pushed prices higher.
