Perry Warjiyo Breaks Silence after Resigning as Bank Indonesia Governor
Jakarta. Perry Warjiyo issued his first public statement on Tuesday, 38 days after announcing his resignation as governor of Bank Indonesia on July 25, congratulating his successor while remaining silent on the reasons behind his abrupt departure.
Perry spoke publicly for the first time since his resignation after the House of Representatives formally approved Destry Damayanti as Bank Indonesia governor for the 2026-2031 term during a plenary session on Tuesday.
In his statement, Perry congratulated Destry as well as Aida Budiman, who was elected senior deputy governor, and Solikin Juhro, who was elected deputy governor for the 2026-2031 term.
He expressed hope that the central bank’s new leadership would continue strengthening Bank Indonesia’s role, particularly as the Indonesian economy faces persistent global uncertainty.
“I hope the new Board of Governors will be able to strengthen Bank Indonesia’s mandate to maintain stability and support sustainable economic growth amid continuing global turbulence,” Perry said.
Perry did not elaborate on the reasons behind his decision to step down. Instead, he expressed gratitude for the trust placed in him during his tenure at the central bank.
“I would also like to express my deepest gratitude for the trust placed in me throughout my time carrying out Bank Indonesia’s duties in accordance with the law and applicable regulations,” he said.
Perry also expressed his best wishes for the central bank as it moves forward under its new leadership.
His resignation after about seven years at the helm of Bank Indonesia prompted President Prabowo Subianto to nominate Destry as the sole candidate to succeed him.
Destry’s appointment marks a historic milestone for the central bank, making her the first woman to be definitively elected governor of Bank Indonesia.
A former chief economist at Bank Mandiri and Mandiri Sekuritas, Destry has served on Bank Indonesia’s Board of Governors since 2019 as senior deputy governor.
