Jakarta. Indonesia’s benchmark stock index ended the week slightly lower on Friday, as investors weighed clarity over Bank Indonesia’s next leadership against uncertainty surrounding the Federal Reserve’s interest-rate outlook.

Jakarta Composite Index (JCI) slipped 0.06%, or 3 points, to close at 6,518 after moving between 6,495 and 6,566 during the session.

A total of 35.2 billion shares changed hands, with turnover reaching Rp15.1 trillion ($853.37 million) across more than 2 million transactions. Declining stocks outnumbered gainers, with 328 shares falling and 276 advancing, while 188 remained unchanged.

Pilarmas Investindo Sekuritas said the House of Representatives’ approval of Destry Damayanti as Bank Indonesia governor for the 2026-2031 term provided a positive domestic signal.

“The certainty over Bank Indonesia’s new leadership is expected to reduce uncertainty over the future direction of monetary policy while maintaining stability and market confidence in Indonesia’s financial markets,” Pilarmas said in a research note on Friday.

Investor attention also turned to the United States, where Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh was scheduled to speak at the annual Jackson Hole symposium later on Friday.

Markets are looking for fresh clues on the direction of US interest rates. Pilarmas said traders were still pricing in a more than 70% probability of a Fed rate hike in December, while expectations for the September meeting pointed to around a 65% chance that rates would remain unchanged.

“Market participants are likely to wait for Fed Chair Kevin Warsh’s speech at the annual Jackson Hole symposium for further clues on the outlook for US interest rates,” Pilarmas said.

Comments from other Fed officials also remained on investors’ radar. Kansas City Fed President Jeff Schmid said current monetary policy was not holding back the economy.

Asian markets, however, mostly moved higher, helping support sentiment in Jakarta. South Korea’s Kospi was the region’s biggest loser, falling 1.8%, while Tokyo’s Nikkei rose 0.4% and Hong Kong’s Hang Seng gained 0.2%. The Shanghai Composite slipped 0.1%.

Investors were also monitoring renewed tensions between the United States and Iran after diplomatic efforts again stalled, according to Pilarmas.

“Washington has also stepped up pressure on Iran by imposing new sanctions earlier this week. Iran condemned the measures as hostile and ineffective,” Pilarmas said.

Still, the brokerage said markets appeared to be largely brushing off the sanctions threat. Domestic sentiment also remained relatively stable after demonstrations calling for the passage of the Asset Forfeiture Bill proceeded in an orderly manner.
