Bekasi. Indonesian conglomerate Lippo Group has donated 30 hectares of land to the government for the development of affordable housing for low-income families, a project that could provide up to 140,000 apartment units, officials said.

The land is located in South Cikarang, Bekasi, east of Jakarta.

Housing and Settlement Areas Minister Maruarar Sirait praised Lippo Group founder Mochtar Riady and his family for the donation, describing it as a significant contribution to the government’s public housing program.

“This is an extraordinary expression of solidarity and humanitarian spirit to help low-income communities,” Maruarar said.

“Based on our team’s initial assessment, the 30-hectare site could allow the construction of around 140,000 housing units,” he added.

Supporting the National Housing Program
Hashim Djojohadikusumo, chairman of the government’s Public Housing Task Force, also expressed appreciation for the land grant, saying it would help address Indonesia’s persistent housing shortage.

“This is truly remarkable. A large area of land has been handed over to the state to build homes that will eventually be owned by our citizens who are poor or cannot yet afford housing,” Hashim said during a visit to the site on Sunday.

He noted that the surrounding area already has education facilities, places of worship, commercial centers, and basic infrastructure, making it suitable for residential development.

Hashim said Indonesia still faces a significant housing challenge, with around 15 million families seeking affordable homes.

In addition, approximately 27 million families currently live in substandard housing that lacks adequate access to clean water and electricity.

“This is a major challenge, but at the same time it presents an opportunity to accelerate the development of public housing,” he said.

Government to Support Financing
Investment Minister Rosan Roeslani said the government would fully support financing for the housing project.

“If we look at this project, it is very promising and the need for housing is enormous. From a financing perspective, we will provide full support,” Rosan said.

He added that the government will also seek to optimize state-owned assets that can be used for public housing projects while encouraging collaboration with private developers.

The initial phase of development will utilize around 12.8 hectares of the donated land.

The plan includes constructing 18 apartment towers, each around 32 stories high, with an estimated project cost of Rp 16 trillion ($944.5 million), Rosan said.

Officials said the project is expected to play a key role in expanding affordable housing supply while strengthening cooperation between the government and the private sector.
