Indonesia, Hong Kong Move to Connect QR Payment Systems
Jakarta. Bank Indonesia (BI) and the Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) have agreed to explore linking their QR payment systems, paving the way for easier cross-border payments between Indonesia and Hong Kong.
The two central banks signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on Thursday to explore interoperability between their QR-based payment systems, Bank Indonesia Executive Director of Communications Ramdan Denny Prakoso said.
The agreement was signed by BI Governor Destry Damayanti and HKMA Chief Executive Eddie Yue on the sidelines of the Indonesia Digital Economy and Finance Festival and Indonesia Fintech Summit and Expo (FEKDI x IFSE), held on Sept. 24-26, 2026.
“BI and HKMA are committed to strengthening bilateral relations and establishing an effective cooperation mechanism to promote faster, more affordable, transparent and inclusive cross-border payments between Indonesia and Hong Kong,” Ramdan said in a statement on Thursday.
Under the MoU, the two authorities will discuss relevant technical, operational and regulatory aspects while exploring a framework for QR-based cross-border payment interoperability.
The planned link-up expands Indonesia’s QRIS Cross-Border network, which is already connected with Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Japan, South Korea and China.
Hong Kong will become the latest destination in Indonesia’s efforts to expand QR-based payment connectivity, with BI also set to sign a similar MoU with the Central Bank of Timor-Leste on Friday.
The Timor-Leste agreement will also cover the use of QRIS to facilitate cross-border payments.
Once both agreements are in place, Indonesia’s QRIS Cross-Border connectivity will extend to eight countries. BI is also preparing cross-border payment cooperation with other countries as it continues to expand Indonesia’s payment system connectivity.
