Mobile Premier League Enters the Indonesian Market
Jakarta. Indonesian gamers can now play esports on mobile gaming platform Mobile Premier League, the owner and operator, India-based Galactus Funware Technology, announced on Friday.
MPL offers a variety of competitive arcade games that can be played by just about anyone. The MPL mobile app has been downloaded more than 25 million times in Indonesia, according to Joe Wadakethalakal, the company's chief executive for the country.
The arrival of MPL in Indonesia will enliven the country's esports industry, still dominated by popular genres such as role-playing games, first-person shooters, battle royale and multiplayer games, Wadakethalakal said.
"MPL has revolutionized the traditional concept of arcade games by packaging it into a platform that is easily accessible through smartphones. MPL is a platform for esports tournaments to create champions with the best skills in the various competitions that we hold every day," he said in a statement.
Indonesia has a very attractive esports market, which according to a 2018 study by gaming market researcher Newzoo, is the largest in Southeast Asia and 17th-largest in the world, with a revenue forecast of $1.08 billion.
The renewed arcade game genre MPL introduced has the potential to reach the wider public, Wadakethalakal said.
"We can become pioneers in the arcade game platform, which can maximize the potential of Indonesia's esports industry, beginning from holding more tournaments to creating more jobs in the creative economy," he said.
The company will work with local developers to add more games to the MPL platform, but it did not provide any further details on who the potential partners.
Esports has been developing rapidly in Indonesia with full support from the government. The country introduced an esports competition for the first time at last year's Asian Games as a demonstration event. It will be part of the official competition at the next Asian Games in Hangzhou, China.
An esports center was established for the gaming community at The Breeze shopping mall in Serpong, Banten, last month, which demonstrates the growth of this sector.
