Batam. Indonesia has marked a new milestone in its Singaporean ties with its Nongsa-Changi undersea cable system.

The cable provides the shortest and most direct connection between Changi and the Nongsa Digital Park in Batam. Telkom's subsidiary Telin and Singapore's BW Digital had partnered to develop the system.

"This digital corridor provides an [additional] capacity of more than 1.6 petabits per second and [a latency] of less than 2 milliseconds," Airlangga said at the cable landing ceremony in Batam. 

This low-latency capacity is expected to support a variety of strategic digital services, including advanced cloud computing, artificial intelligence (AI), high-frequency financial transactions, and the development of next-generation digital services.

Airlangga went on to say that the Nongsa-Changi cable could form a new digital corridor in the Southeast Asian region.

Batam has earned recognition as one of Indonesia's digital gateways, thanks to its strategic location, reliable connectivity, continuously growing energy supply, and investor-friendly policies.

The Nongsa-Changi cable also followed the leaders' retreat in early July 2026.

BW Digital's NDP1 facility at Nongsa Digital Park has an IT capacity of 120 MW. DayOne and INA are developing a new hyperscale campus with a contracted electricity supply line of up to 450 MW. Oracle has chosen Batam as the Indonesia North Cloud Region.

Indonesia is home to 235.26 million internet users with a penetration rate of 81.72%, and fixed broadband subscribers reaching 99.5 million. Indonesia is also the fourth largest potential AI market in Asia after China, India, and Japan, with a market value reaching $70 billion or around 6.4% of the Asian AI market.

The government continues to strengthen energy needs and ensure efforts to support the development of digital infrastructure. This includes adding 100 gigawatts of solar power. Indonesia is also seeking seats at the CPTPP trading bloc and the rich-country club OECD to build more predictable business environment.

"Let's build this digital corridor, not only with cables and data [centers], but also with trust, partnership and shared vision," Airlangga said.

"Hopefully the benefits will not only be felt by Indonesia and Singapore, but also by the entire ASEAN region and beyond."
