Communication Ministry Demands Clarification from Biznet Amid Alleged Data Breach
Jakarta. The Ministry of Communication and Informatics has officially reached out to Biznet, an internet operator, seeking clarification regarding an alleged data breach compromising 380,000 records on the dark web. The leaked information encompasses personal details such as names, emails, national ID numbers, tax ID numbers, phone numbers, and addresses.
"We dispatched the letter yesterday. In circumstances like these, it's imperative for them to furnish clarification," said Semuel Abrijani Pangerapan, the Director General of Informatics Applications during a briefing at the Ministry's Press Room in Central Jakarta on Friday.
Semuel underscored Biznet's responsibility for safeguarding the user data under their purview, as mandated by the Personal Data Protection Law. He emphasized the necessity for companies to fortify their security infrastructure in the event of a data breach, considering the potential adverse impact on users.
"In the event of a breach, there are repercussions for the public, and those affected have the option to pursue legal avenues against the perpetrators. We encourage all stakeholders to comply with existing regulations and mitigate any emerging risks," he added.
Social media reports have circulated indicating that 380,000 Biznet users have fallen victim to the data breach on the dark web. Cybersecurity expert Teguh Aprianto disclosed this information via the social media account X (@secgron) on Sunday.
According to Teguh, the data breach was orchestrated by cybercriminals posing as Biznet employees. Allegedly, these individuals took such actions due to their objection to Biznet's Fair Usage Policy (FUP).
In addition to the leak of Biznet user data, these individuals have threatened to escalate their actions.
"If the FUP policy is not revoked by March 25, the threat actor will proceed to disclose internal data from Biznet Gio, Biznet's cloud computing service," warned Teguh.
