Tokopedia’s President Named One of Most Powerful Indonesian Women
Jakarta. Fortune Indonesia recently named President of Tokopedia Melissa Siska Juminto as one of the top 20 most powerful women in the country.
The list recognizes 20 influential and inspiring Indonesian women in business, and women leaders who work in the government, art, and social sector. The 2023 Most Powerful Women (MPW) also includes Manpower Minister Ida Fauziyah, House Speaker Puan Maharani, and Pertamina’s Finance Director Emma Sri Martini. They were chosen for their influence, change, and impact on their institutions and communities.
Melissa first became Tokopedia’s 44th Nakama —the nickname for the company’s employees— in Dec. 2012. She first started as an accountant, but then took charge of other matters ranging from products, and marketing to human resources. In Feb. 2023, she was appointed to lead Tokopedia, replacing William Tanuwijaya.
“I have been in Tokopedia for 11 years. There are many new things in this new role, but of course, there are things that I’m already familiar with from my previous role as the COO of the company. I will carry on what William had started, which is democratizing commerce through technology. So people do not have to come to big cities to succeed. We have always said that Tokopedia’s success comes from the merchant’s success as well,” Melissa was quoted as saying in a recent interview with Fortune Indonesia.
Under Melissa’s leadership, Tokopedia aims to further encourage more women to fill leadership positions in the company. The marketplace firm also seeks to make itself more friendly to career women and working moms, among others, by having nursery and kids' rooms in the office. Tokopedia implements an equal pay policy, meaning that employees are paid based on their performance regardless of their gender and background. Tokopedia also provides three-month maternity leave, 45 days of miscarriage leave, menstruation leave, and a 10-day paternity leave. New moms also get to work for only 20 hours per week for consecutive weeks as they enter motherhood. Parents can also join parenting classes and enjoy some Nakaparent privileges, among others.
As home to more than 14 million Indonesian merchants, Melissa is aware of the need to build Tokopedia as a sustainable business. The company integrates sustainability aspects into all of the company activities, including how it operates and plans its growth. As part of the GoTo group, Tokopedia embraces the three zeros concept: namely to achieve zero emission, zero waste, and zero barriers by 2030.
As part of the zero waste pillar, Tokopedia seeks to reduce and get rid of all the waste in the environment and landfills by partnering with all parties from the downstream to the upstream sector to reuse and recycle single-use plastic. With zero barriers, it aims to become an inclusive platform that enables all to find a sustainable income.
