Jakarta. The state utility firm PLN has inked a joint operation agreement with the Sumenep regency government on solar power generation.

The Danantara-backed agreement sees the use of two solar power plant units. Each facility has a capacity of 1 megawatt peak (MWp), equipped with a 4 megawatt-hour (MWh) battery energy storage system. It also uses a  grant from the Torang IWIP Berbakti Foundation

Indonesia aims to generate 100 gigawatts of solar power over the next few years.

According to Danantara Chief Executive Officer Rosan Roeslani, this initiative demonstrates cross-stakeholder collaboration in improving equitable power access for remote areas.

"It will impact (provide light) 2,000 families in the two areas, namely Gili Labak Hamlet and Pagerungan Kecil Village. Each facility has 1 MW of electricity. So, coincidentally, this will serve as a pilot project, and we hope it can be implemented soon," Rosan was quoted as saying in a press statement.

Local residents in the said areas had previously used personal generators to power their electronics.

In Pagerungan Kecil, the solar plant will supplement the electricity supply currently supported by a 50-kilowatt-peak (kWp) PLN solar power plant. Previously, there were two village-owned diesel plants which possess 600 kilovolt-amperes, but these facilities are no longer operational.

The new plants will help supply electricity to residents 24/7 and have the potential to save 1.1 million liters of fuel per year.

"We hope that after the signing of this memorandum of understanding, we can receive guidance so that the implementation of this project can run smoothly. We sincerely hope that the installation will contribute significantly to the welfare of the community," Head of the Torang IWIP Berbakti Foundation Wahyu Budhi Santoso said.

Sumenep Regent Achmad Fauzi Wongsojudo said that the regency was home to 126 islands, 48 of which are inhabited, which presents unique geographical challenges in providing electricity infrastructure.

"This is crucial for us in continuing to encourage increased electrification for our people," Achmad Fauzi said.

PLN President Director Darmawan Prasodjo said that the company was "ready to follow up on this collaboration".

"So that the utilization of the solar power plant grant can be realized immediately and provide reliable electricity to the people of the two areas of Sumenep Regency," said Darmawan.

He is also confident that the 100-gigawatt goal is achievable by having everyone work together.
