PLN Paves Way for Global Carbon Market with Energy Transition
Jakarta. State-run electricity firm PLN recently reaffirmed its commitment to develop a national carbon market that meets global standards, including by developing renewable energy.
Evy Haryadi, the company's director for technology, engineering, and sustainability, made the statement when addressing a panel discussion on the margins of COP30 Belém in Brazil. Evy said that Indonesia had a significant potential to build a robust carbon ecosystem. PLN expressed its readiness to act as a catalyst in the carbon market.
In its 2025–2034 business plan, PLN targets the addition of 52.9 gigawatts (GW) of renewable energy, including baseload, variable energy, and energy storage systems.
"PLN's renewable energy expansion potential is capable of producing up to 250 million tons of green energy. This is not just a regulatory compliance measure, but a real opportunity to create green economic value and accelerate the national energy transition. PLN is ready to act as a catalyst in ensuring a credible carbon market," said Evy.
PLN ensures that every carbon credit issuance meets global standards, in line with the key principles of high-integrity carbon. PLN continues to strengthen international collaboration, including with the Norwegian government. Its international partnerships focus on designing schemes and governance, increasing capacity, and harmonizing global standards with national policies. This way, Indonesia's carbon credits can be accepted in the international market.
According to Evy, this step is part of Indonesia's contribution to playing a strategic role in the global climate agenda, while providing reliable, affordable, and sustainable energy for all people.
Deputy Speaker of the People's Consultative Assembly (MPR) Eddy Soeparno emphasized that Indonesia's success in driving low-carbon economic growth would depend heavily on regulatory consistency, as well as multi-stakeholder collaboration at both national and international levels. COP30 is a crucial opportunity to demonstrate Indonesia's readiness to lead a credible carbon ecosystem in the region.
"Indonesia must send a clear signal that we are ready to build a carbon ecosystem that is transparent, measurable, and capable of creating real economic value. Therefore, synchronizing cross-sector policies is no longer an option, but a necessity so that our carbon market truly becomes the center of gravity for regional collaboration," said Eddy.
Ignatius Wahyu Marjaka, a director at the Environment Ministry, told the same forum that Indonesia had prepared a series of strategic steps to align with international carbon trading standards.
"Indonesia has actually begun developing an international carbon market policy by introducing bilateral agreements with several partner countries, one of which is Norway," Wahyu said.
Strengthening the integrity of the carbon market is a national priority, particularly in fostering cross-sectoral understanding, infrastructure readiness, and improving governance capacity. He emphasized that technology, transparency, and market accountability are key factors in ensuring Indonesia's credibility in global carbon trading.
