Jakarta. State-owned utility firm PLN has distributed 23,040 renewable energy certificate (REC) units or equivalent to 23 megawatt hours (Mwh) of green electricity to miner PT Borneo Indobara (BIB) on Sunday.

PLN conducted this deal via its main distribution unit (UID) for South Kalimantan and Central Kalimantan area.

The collaboration demonstrates PLN's commitment, along with its partners, to encourage the use of environmentally friendly energy in the mining industry.  With this addition, PT BIB's use of REC services is now the largest in the Kalimantan region, with 42,096 units, equivalent to 42 MWh, up from 19,056 units in 2023.

PT BIB Chief Operating Officer Raden Utoro appreciated PLN's commitment to green mining. PT BIB requires 200 to 240 megavolt amperes (MVA) by 2028. The company wants to meet the demand using environmentally friendly electricity. This aligns with the Indonesian government's program towards sustainable national mining.

"We greatly appreciate and thank PLN. This demonstrates our support for the government's program to actively reduce carbon emissions, increase energy efficiency, reduce fuel imports, and, of course, support national energy security," said Raden.

PT BIB's commitment to green mining also extends beyond the use of PLN's REC services. The company continues to implement environmentally friendly approaches in various sectors, including the electrification of its operational fleet.

"This program is one of the first of its kind in Indonesia on such a large scale, with an electrification target of 25% of the fleet switching to electric power by 2026. The target is to reach 75% by 2028, and to reach zero emissions by 2028-2029," Raden said.

PLN's Director of Retail and Commerce, Adi Priyanto, stated that this showed how PLN is working together with industry players in supporting the clean energy transition in the country. PLN also pledged to continuing to provide green electricity services to boost the competitiveness of the national industrial sector.

"We are fully committed to supporting the competitiveness of the national industry by encouraging the use of clean and environmentally friendly energy. PLN not only provides reliable electricity but also offers green products such as RECs to help industrial customers increase their competitiveness while contributing to the national energy transition agenda, particularly green mining. Collaboration with the industrial sector is key to creating a sustainable clean energy ecosystem," Adi said.

Iwan Soelistijono, General Manager of PLN's South and Central Kalimantan UID, believes this collaboration can serve as a benchmark for clean energy transformation for other mining sectors in Indonesia.

"We appreciate and are grateful for PT BIB's trust in optimizing REC services as part of its commitment to implementing green mining practices. Hopefully, this enthusiasm will inspire other industry players, so that the benefits of the energy transition can be more widely felt," said Iwan.

PLN is pushing green energy as a service (GEAS) via the RECs as it seeks to promote use of renewables in a transparent and internationally recognized manner. Each REC certificate proves that the electricity used by customers comes from non-fossil fuel plants. The US APX Tradable Instrument for Global Renewables (TIGRs) tracking system ensures its compliance with international standards.

Throughout 2025, PLN's national REC sales reached 6.43 terawatt hours (TWh), representing a 19.65% increase compared to the previous year.
