BPS Steps Up 2026 Economic Census Prep with Digital, AI Tools
Jakarta. Central Statistics Agency (BPS) is stepping up preparations for the 2026 Economic Census (SE2026) as it convened its 2025 Technical Coordination and Evaluation Meeting in the capital. The forum served as a nationwide consolidation platform for BPS to align strategies, review operational readiness, and coordinate key stages ahead of the June–July 2026 census rollout.
Closing the meeting on Nov. 15, BPS Chief Amalia Adininggar Widyasanti said SE2026 will be a crucial moment to reassess Indonesia’s economic landscape. “Complete and accurate data is the foundation of decision-making. Both the government and businesses need it to craft targeted policies and strategies,” she said.
The meeting also reviewed field trials conducted throughout 2025 and discussed public communication strategies to secure broad support from businesses and communities across the country.
BPS reaffirmed its commitment to delivering high-quality economic data that reflects emerging trends such as the rise of the creative economy and green economy. SE2026 is expected to provide a more comprehensive picture of business structures, support the rebasing of GDP calculations, improve national data frames, and offer deeper analytical insights for both national and regional development planning.
To ensure smooth execution, BPS is strengthening coordination with ministries, local governments, and business associations. The collaboration aims to widen outreach, improve mobilization of field officers, and boost public awareness, ultimately contributing to strong response rates.
A key innovation in SE2026 is the shift to digital data collection. Enumerators will use tablets connected to a secure central system, equipped with automatic validation features to minimize input errors and allow real-time checks. Data transmitted to the central server can be immediately analyzed to detect anomalies or inconsistencies. For large enterprises, BPS is offering a self-enumeration option, enabling respondents to fill out forms via a website link sent to their email, allowing more flexibility without waiting for on-site visits.
Another major innovation is the use of Generative AI (Gen-AI). A Gen-AI–powered chatbot will be available on the official SE2026 landing page to help the public and business respondents access complete information easily. Gen-AI will also support the identification of the Indonesian Standard Industrial Classification (KBLI), improving the precision of business sector classification.
Through these technological upgrades, BPS aims to deliver more accurate, reliable, and timely economic information as Indonesia prepares for one of its most comprehensive economic mapping exercises.
