Jakarta. Foreign tourists spent more money during visits to Indonesia in the second quarter despite shortening their stays, with average spending rising 7.2% year-on-year to $1,285 per trip, Indonesia’s Central Statistics Agency (BPS) said on Monday.

The increase came as Indonesia welcomed 1.39 million foreign visitors in June, up 0.32% from May but 2.15% lower than a year earlier. Total arrivals in the January-June period reached 7.45 million, an annual increase of 5.71%.

"Average spending per foreign tourist visit reached $1,285. It declined compared with the first quarter of 2026 but increased from the second quarter of last year," BPS Deputy for Distribution and Services Statistics Ateng Hartono said.

Accommodation accounted for the largest share of spending at 37.21%, followed by food and beverages (19.81%) and shopping and souvenirs (11.04%).

Foreign tourists stayed an average of 10.30 nights during the second quarter, down from 10.83 nights in the first quarter.

Despite the shorter stays, spending patterns shifted toward leisure activities, vehicle rentals and domestic flights, indicating that visitors allocated more of their budgets to exploring destinations across Indonesia.

Malaysia remained the largest source of foreign visitors in June, accounting for 18.66% of total arrivals, followed by Singapore (12.25%) and Australia (12.08%).

Most visitors entered through the country's main gateways, which recorded 1.21 million arrivals, while 175,700 entered via border crossings. Air travel accounted for 78.84% of arrivals through the main entry points.

Bali's Ngurah Rai International Airport and Soekarno-Hatta International Airport handled 845,640 arrivals, or 88.58% of all foreign visitors entering Indonesia by air.

Domestic tourism also remained strong, with Indonesians making 107.19 million domestic trips in June, up 0.97% from May and 1.98% from a year earlier. Cumulative domestic trips reached 630.41 million in the first six months of the year, up 2.71% annually.

Meanwhile, outbound travel by Indonesian residents climbed to 766,780 trips in June, surging 39.32% from the previous month and rising 5.39% from a year earlier. Malaysia was the top destination, followed by Saudi Arabia, Singapore and China.

The stronger tourism activity also boosted hotel occupancy. The occupancy rate for star-rated hotels rose to 54.28% in June, up 4.30 percentage points from a year earlier and 3.52 percentage points from May. Non-star hotels and other accommodations posted an occupancy rate of 27.59%, while the average length of stay at star-rated hotels increased slightly to 1.63 nights from 1.59 nights a year earlier.
