North Aceh. Bank Negara Indonesia (BNI) has begun clearing mud and flood debris from schools affected by flash floods in North Aceh, aiming to accelerate the recovery of education facilities and support the resumption of teaching and learning activities.

The initiative aligns with efforts by the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB), which has targeted the reopening of affected schools in North Aceh by early January 2026.

BNI Corporate Secretary Okki Rushartomo said restoring education facilities was a priority in the early recovery phase, given the critical role schools play in ensuring continuity of learning for children after disasters.

“BNI is committed to being present through concrete action on the ground. By clearing schools of mud and flood debris, we hope to help restore a conducive learning environment so education activities can resume as soon as possible,” Okki said in a statement on Sunday.

The clean-up operation is being carried out in coordination with fellow state-owned enterprises under the BUMN Peduli program, titled One Heart for Sumatra, and coordinated by Danantara Indonesia. The program mobilizes shared resources and logistics to ensure a coordinated response to flood impacts.

One of the main locations targeted in the current phase is State Islamic Elementary School 33 in North Aceh. To support the operation, BNI has deployed heavy equipment, including excavators, dump trucks, and water tankers, alongside field personnel.

The activity forms part of BNI’s ongoing social and environmental responsibility programme, which may be expanded based on on-the-ground needs. Further support could include additional clean-up efforts, facility renovations, and repairs to supporting school infrastructure.

“We hope this support helps restore a safe and comfortable school environment, allowing students and teachers to return to normal activities,” Okki said.

Through collaboration with multiple stakeholders, BNI reaffirmed its commitment to disaster response efforts while supporting the broader social and educational recovery of communities affected by flooding.
