Jakarta. President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo has responded positively to his successor Prabowo Subianto’s plans to meet Ex-President Megawati Soekarnoputri.

The meeting of the two political leaders will likely reveal --or at least give hints to-- what stance would Megawati’s Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) take in the future government. PDI-P is the only incumbent party that has not openly declared its support for the Prabowo administration. It remains a mystery on whether PDI-P will join the Prabowo government or take up the opposition role.

Megawati previously nominated Prabowo’s rival Ganjar Pranowo in the February presidential election. Prabowo is the leader of Gerindra who has formed a huge alliance of parties called the Advanced Indonesia Coalition, popularly known as KIM, that endorsed him as president.

Preparations are underway to have the two party leaders meet before Prabowo assumes office on Oct. 20.

Jokowi, who had won two elections with PDI-P’s backing, said that the Prabowo-Megawati meeting would be good for the country.

“I think it’s good to see them [Prabowo and Megawati] meet one another. Maintaining communications between two national figures can help advance this country and nation,” Jokowi told the press during a business trip to East Nusantara Tenggara on Wednesday.

Prabowo has vowed to continue Jokowi’s policies as president, even picking the latter’s eldest son Gibran Rakabuming Raka as his vice president-elect.

PDI-P’s senior official and Megawati’s daughter Puan Maharani had dropped some hints about the meeting plans on several occasions.

When asked by the press, Puan neither confirmed nor denied whether Prabowo-Megawati would discuss the possibility of PDI-P joining the KIM coalition, only telling reporters to just wait how the meeting would turn out. Earlier this week, Puan told the media that the talks would take place “as soon as possible”.
