Jakarta. Indonesia will host one of badminton’s premier events this week as the Daihatsu Indonesia Masters 2026 gets underway at the Istora Gelora Bung Karno in Jakarta, featuring top players from around the world and a total prize purse of $500,000.

The tournament, part of the HSBC BWF World Tour Super 500 series, runs from Tuesday through Sunday and is expected to draw packed crowds at the iconic Istora arena, long regarded as one of badminton’s most intimidating venues.

A strong international field has been confirmed, led by China’s former world champion Chen Yu Fei and Malaysia’s world-class men’s doubles pair Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik. Several leading players from South Korea, Japan and Denmark are also set to compete, adding depth to an already competitive draw.

Indonesia, one of badminton’s traditional powerhouses, will field many of its top names. Men’s singles standout Jonatan Christie and women’s singles player Putri Kusuma Wardani headline the home challenge, alongside men’s doubles pair Fajar Alfian and Muhammad Shohibul Fikri. Local fans will also be watching closely as emerging talents such as Alwi Farhan, Moh Zaki Ubaidillah, and mixed doubles pair Jafar Hidayatullah and Felisha Alberta Nathaniel Pasaribu make their appearances.

In total, 274 players from 21 countries will compete, promising high-intensity matches amid the distinctive roar of Jakarta’s badminton faithful.

Achmad Budiharto, chairman of the organizing committee, said preparations for the tournament had been completed, covering everything from venue readiness to athlete facilities and fan engagement.

“We have ensured the venue, operations and supporting facilities for athletes are fully prepared, along with various activities and entertainment outside the arena for spectators,” Budiharto said at a press briefing on Monday.

He added that the presence of top-ranked players from badminton powerhouses such as China, South Korea, Japan and Denmark would elevate the level of competition. Organizers and the Indonesian Badminton Association (PBSI) are also aiming to position the tournament as a “people’s festival,” with affordable ticket prices and a range of sportainment activities for fans.

From a sporting perspective, PBSI’s head of development and achievement, Eng Hian, said Indonesia’s preparations had been carried out in a phased and integrated manner. The national team is targeting two titles at the tournament, with men’s doubles seen as the strongest medal prospect.

“Even so, other sectors are also being pushed to compete deep into the later rounds, given how evenly matched the Super 500 circuit has become,” Eng Hian said.
