Rare Baby Monkey Saved from Burning Tree in West Java, Reunited with Mother
Kuningan, West Java. Amid flames engulfing the forests of Mount Ciremai in West Java, the faint cries of a baby Javan surili caught the attention of volunteers battling a wildfire.
The tiny primate, with its distinctive blue face and white fur, was found clinging to the branch of a burning tree. Rescuers managed to bring it to safety before reuniting it with its mother the following morning.
The dramatic rescue took place on the night of Oct. 22 at an elevation of approximately 1,600 meters above sea level.
Darsa, a 51-year-old volunteer firefighter, recalled hearing an unusual sound at around 11 p.m. while helping contain the blaze in the mountainous area of Kuningan Regency.
"As we began moving in to extinguish the flames, we heard a strange sound. At first, I thought it was a bird," Darsa said Saturday.
He and other volunteers followed the sound and were stunned to discover a baby surili clinging to a small branch of a charred tree.
"It was holding on to a small branch of a saninten tree that had already been burned," he said.
The male infant was estimated to be just one week old. It was extremely weak, and its umbilical cord was still attached.
The volunteers immediately moved the animal to safety and provided emergency care.
Once its condition improved, they began searching for its mother.
The following morning, the rescuers spotted a group of surilis about 300 meters from where the infant had been found.
They carefully placed the baby in a safe location and withdrew to avoid frightening the animals.
Then came the moment they had hoped for.
A female surili descended from the trees, approached the infant and carried it back to the group, bringing the rescue to a touching conclusion.
A Rare Primate Under Threat
The Javan surili is a protected primate native to western Java whose population has declined as its forest habitat comes under pressure.
According to the West Java provincial government, only an estimated 4,000 to 6,000 individuals remain in the wild.
The species is found primarily in conservation areas and protected mountain forests in West Java.
The surili was also chosen as a mascot for Indonesia's 2016 National Sports Week, which was hosted by West Java.
Adult surilis have grayish fur and a body length of approximately 40–50 centimeters, excluding their tails. They can weigh around 6.5 kilograms.
