Six Firms Sanctioned as Fires Ravage 1,500 Hectares in Kalimantan
Depok. The government is moving to seal six companies over forest and land fires spanning more than 1,500 hectares in Kalimantan, while authorities continue to focus on extinguishing active hotspots.
Environment Minister Mohammad Jumhur Hidayat said the government had mobilized all available resources to contain the fires, involving the Indonesian Military (TNI), National Police, National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB), regional governments, forestry authorities, and the Environment Ministry.
“For now, the focus is on putting out the fires. Everyone is working toward that,” Jumhur said Thursday at the World Lake Day 2026 commemoration.
He said several fire hotspots had already been extinguished, while the government continued to receive data from the field to determine further response measures.
At the same time, the government has stepped up legal action against companies suspected of being linked to the fires.
Jumhur initially said seven companies would be sealed this week, citing a report from his deputy. However, official data from the Environment Ministry showed that six companies are set to face the measure.
The six companies had earlier been sanctioned by the Forestry Ministry after inspections found forest and land fires across a combined 1,511.55 hectares of areas under their management in West Kalimantan, Central Kalimantan, and East Kalimantan.
Five companies were subjected to government enforcement measures, while MPK received both a business permit suspension and government enforcement measures after fires on its concession were found to be extensive and recurrent.
The sanctions require the companies to improve their fire prevention and control systems and restore affected areas.
The sanctioned companies, whose names were disclosed only through initials, are WEL, FI, MPK, and WSP in West Kalimantan; NES in Central Kalimantan; and PSR in East Kalimantan.
WEL recorded the largest burned area at around 760.51 hectares, followed by MPK with 394.83 hectares, WSP with 107.70 hectares, FI with 95.87 hectares, PSR with 82.26 hectares, and NES with 70.38 hectares.
Together, the fires across the six companies' managed areas covered 1,511.55 hectares.
