Jakarta. President Prabowo Subianto has asked several prominent figures, including former Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal, and Security Affairs Mohammad Mahfud MD, to join a newly planned National Police Reform Commission, a close presidential aide said Friday.

The government aims to establish the team next month in response to mounting public pressure following violent protests in several Indonesian cities, triggered in part by police crackdowns on demonstrators.

The National Police have faced growing criticism in recent years over allegations of excessive force, corruption, and lack of accountability. Public distrust reached a new peak after recent protests turned violent, prompting calls from civil society groups, lawmakers, and academics for a comprehensive overhaul of the force.

“President Prabowo is currently reaching out to respected figures to join the team. One of them is Mr. Mahfud MD,” State Secretary Minister Prasetyo Hadi told reporters.

During a meeting at the Presidential Palace on September 11, a number of public figures urged the president to carry out a thorough evaluation and reform of the police force.

Mahfud, a seasoned politician, bureaucrat, and respected legal scholar, is widely regarded for his strong defense of the rule of law. He previously served as Chief Justice of the Constitutional Court before being appointed coordinating security minister under President Joko Widodo.

In the 2024 general election, Mahfud was the vice-presidential running mate of Ganjar Pranowo, but their ticket was defeated by Prabowo. Currently unaffiliated with any political party, Mahfud has been living as a private citizen since leaving office.
