Ombudsman Chief Named Suspect in Nickel Mining Corruption Case
Jakarta. The Attorney General’s Office has named Ombudsman Chairman Hery Susanto a suspect in an alleged corruption case tied to nickel mining governance spanning more than a decade.
The designation was announced on Thursday by Syarief Sulaeman Nahdi, director of investigations at the Attorney General’s Office’s special crimes unit.
“Today, Jampidsus investigators have named HS (Hery Susanto) as a suspect in an alleged corruption case involving the governance of nickel mining trade from 2013 to 2025,” Syarief told reporters.
He said the decision followed sufficient evidence gathered through a series of investigative steps, including searches at multiple locations linked to the case.
The probe stems from a dispute involving a company, TSHI, over the calculation of non-tax state revenue (PNBP) by the Forestry Ministry. Investigators allege the company sought to challenge or adjust the policy through the Ombudsman, involving Hery Susanto.
Authorities said that following the intervention, TSHI was instructed to independently calculate its payment obligations. During that process, Hery allegedly received funds from an individual identified as LKM, a director at the company.
“The total amount handed over by one party is approximately Rp1.5 billion,” Syarief said.
Hery has been charged under multiple provisions of Indonesia’s anti-corruption laws, including Articles 12(a) and (b), Article 5, as well as Article 606 of the new Criminal Code.
He has been detained for an initial 20-day period at a detention facility in South Jakarta as the investigation continues.
