East Java. Mount Bromo in East Java has been temporarily closed to tourists following a wildfire that has been burning in Taman Nasional Bromo Tengger Semeru (TNBTS) since Aug. 3.

As of Monday night, the wildfire had affected approximately 742.70 hectares of land, according to the latest data from TNBTS authorities. The affected area stretches from Blok Bantengan, where the fire was first reported, to Watu Gede, Blok Jantur, B29 and Bukit Dingklik.

The Tourism Ministry said the closure was necessary to ensure the safety of tourists, local communities, park officers and tourism workers while authorities respond to the fire. Tourists are advised not to visit the area until authorities officially declare it safe.

The closure affects visitors who had booked tickets from Aug. 9, 2026, until the reopening of the national park. According to TNBTS data, 3,062 tourists had booked online tickets for visits between Aug. 9 and 15, including 391 international visitors.

Visitors affected by the closure have two options:

  • 100% refund: The full price of the Bromo entrance ticket will be returned to the visitor’s bank account or e-wallet.

  • Free rescheduling: Visitors can move their trip to another date without additional fees, with rescheduled visits available until Dec. 31, 2026.

How to Claim Your Bromo Ticket Refund
Visitors who want to request a refund or reschedule must:

  1. Fill out the official refund and rescheduling form and upload proof of payment here.

  2. Submit the request by Aug. 31, 2026 at the latest.

  3. Wait for the refund to be processed. Refunds are expected to take three to 14 business days.

  4. Check their email or WhatsApp for confirmation.

For assistance, tourists can contact TNBTS customer support via WhatsApp at 085117788005 or 085158891328, or check the park’s official Instagram account, @bbtnbromotenggersemeru.

Tourists should use official channels for updates on the closure and reopening of Mount Bromo.

What About Hotel Bookings?

The ticket refund policy only applies to entrance tickets to the TNBTS area. Hotel and accommodation refunds are not automatically covered.

According to the Tourism Ministry, there is currently no special refund or rescheduling policy for hotels affected by the Bromo closure. Visitors will need to contact their accommodation providers directly and follow each property's cancellation policy.

The ministry said it will continue coordinating with relevant authorities and tourism businesses while the fire is being handled and will work to restore tourism activities once the area is declared safe.
