Indonesia Reports No Foreign Haze Complaints as Fires Affect 107,000 Hectares
Jakarta. Indonesia has received no complaints from neighboring countries over cross-border haze from its wildfires, the government said on Monday, as fires have affected approximately 107,000 hectares across the archipelago.
"As of today, there have been no reports," Coordinating Minister for Political and Security Affairs Djamari Chaniago told a press conference in Jakarta.
The government is nevertheless stepping up efforts to prevent smoke from spreading beyond affected areas, including across Indonesia's borders, he said.
"We are doing everything we can to avoid disrupting others, including our neighboring countries," Djamari said.
Indonesia has deployed about 43 helicopters for aerial firefighting operations, while another 10 to 15 fixed-wing aircraft are being prepared for deployment depending on conditions and operational requirements.
Ground crews and equipment have also been mobilized. Authorities are using flexible water tanks as temporary reservoirs to supply firefighters operating in areas where access to water is difficult.
The government estimates that fires have affected around 107,000 hectares across the country, with prevention and firefighting operations concentrated in six particularly vulnerable provinces: Riau, Jambi, South Sumatra, West Kalimantan, Central Kalimantan and South Kalimantan.
Several of those areas contain extensive peatlands, which become particularly vulnerable to fire during prolonged dry conditions and can produce persistent smoke when burning.
Haze originating from fires in Sumatra and Kalimantan has the potential to affect neighboring countries including Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei, depending on the location of the fires and prevailing winds.
Wildfires have also broken out elsewhere in Indonesia, including around Mount Bromo in East Java, Mount Gede Pangrango in West Java and Mount Rinjani in West Nusa Tenggara, Djamari said.
