Ministers Start Switching to Locally Made Maung Official Cars
Jakarta. Coordinating ministers and several heads of government agencies began using locally made Maung MV3 Garuda Limousines as official vehicles on Monday, marking the initial rollout of the armored cars across President Prabowo Subianto's administration.
Coordinating Economic Minister Airlangga Hartarto said only 18 vehicles have been delivered so far, with coordinating ministers and agency chiefs receiving the first units.
“The coordinating ministers are the first to use them starting today,” Airlangga said at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta.
“Procurement only began this year, so deliveries are still limited,” he added.
Airlangga said funding for the procurement had been settled, although he did not disclose the total budget or the number of vehicles ultimately expected to be acquired.
The Maung MV3 Garuda Limousine is produced by state-owned defense manufacturer Pindad in Bandung, West Java.
Developed from Pindad's Maung MV3 platform, the limousine weighs about 2.95 tons and incorporates composite armor and bullet-resistant glass rated at B5/B6 protection levels. It is powered by an engine producing about 199 horsepower and has a maximum speed of 100 kilometers per hour.
The vehicle is also equipped with run-flat tires designed to allow continued movement following a puncture.
From Presidential Car to Ministerial Fleet
Prabowo has been Maung's most prominent government user, having used the locally produced vehicle since his inauguration as president in October 2024.
He has also taken the vehicle overseas.
A Maung MV3 Garuda Limousine was transported aboard an Indonesian Air Force Airbus A400M to Cebu in May for Prabowo's use during the 48th ASEAN Summit in the Philippines, marking its deployment as a presidential vehicle during an overseas visit.
The broader Maung family is also being produced in substantial numbers for Indonesia's military and police.
In March 2025, the Defense Ministry handed over 700 Maung MV3 Tangguh/Spartan vehicles as part of a phased procurement program. Of those, 650 went to branches of the Indonesian Armed Forces and 50 to the National Police's Mobile Brigade Corps.
Pindad said the delivery was part of a Defense Ministry procurement contract dating from 2022.
The ministerial rollout extends the Maung platform's use beyond the president, military and police into the government's civilian executive fleet, although deliveries remain limited for now.
