Badung, Bali. Megawati Soekarnoputri has officially been reappointed as the chairwoman of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) for the 2025–2030 term, cementing her leadership for another five years.

The confirmation was made during the party’s sixth national congress held at the Bali Nusa Dua Convention Center (BNDCC) on Friday.

Komarudin Watubun, the congress’s steering committee chair, told reporters that Megawati’s reappointment came after strong calls from thousands of party delegates who urged her to immediately resume her post following the congress’s opening ceremony.

“She has taken the oath and is now officially the party chair. All that’s left is for her to form the new leadership lineup,” Komarudin said.

He explained that the reappointment was a procedural formality, as the chairmanship vote had already taken place before the congress. The main agenda of the congress --the confirmation of the party’s top leader-- was completed ahead of schedule.

With her re-election confirmed, Megawati is now expected to finalize the structure of PDI-P’s central board for the 2025–2030 period. The names and positions of key party officials will be announced directly by the chairwoman in the coming days.

Megawati, the daughter of Indonesia’s founding president Soekarno, has led PDI-P since 1999, turning it into one of the country’s most influential political forces. Under her leadership, the party has won multiple national elections and supported the rise of major political figures, including former President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo, whom PDI-P backed in the 2014 and 2019 presidential elections.

Megawati, who served as Indonesia’s fifth president from 2001 to 2004, is widely regarded as a political matriarch whose influence extends far beyond party lines. PDI-P remains the largest party in the House of Representatives with 110 seats and will continue to be a major player in the national coalition landscape.
