Jakarta. Indonesian artist and former lawmaker Guruh Soekarnoputra, the youngest son of founding President Sukarno, is in critical condition and remains unconscious at a Jakarta hospital, his family said Thursday.

Guruh, 73, is receiving intensive treatment at Siloam Hospital Semanggi, according to his nephew Didi Mahardika.

“Uncle Guruh is currently not in good condition and remains critical. He is still unconscious and is receiving intensive treatment and monitoring from the medical team at Siloam Hospital in Semanggi,” Didi said.

“Our family remains optimistic that Uncle Guruh will recover.”

The family has declined to disclose the illness for which Guruh is being treated and has asked that his privacy be respected.

Didi said Guruh's health had been poor for about a year. Before his latest hospitalization, he had spent four weeks receiving treatment at Medistra Hospital in Jakarta and initially showed improvement.

“He had been unwell for the past year. Before being treated here, he had also been hospitalized at Medistra Hospital in Jakarta for four weeks and his condition had improved, but it has now worsened again,” Didi said.

Independent reports Thursday also quoted Didi as confirming that Guruh remained unconscious and under intensive medical supervision, while the family was withholding details of his illness.

Didi said President Prabowo Subianto had been informed of Guruh's condition and had asked that he receive intensive medical care.

“The president has also asked that he receive intensive treatment, considering that Uncle Guruh is one of Indonesia's cultural and historical figures,” Didi said.

“We ask the public to pray for his recovery.”

Artist, Cultural Figure and Politician
Born Mohammad Guruh Irianto Soekarnoputra in Jakarta on Jan. 13, 1953, Guruh is the youngest child of Sukarno and Fatmawati and the younger brother of former President Megawati Soekarnoputri.

Guruh developed an interest in music and dance from childhood and went on to become a prominent composer, choreographer and performing artist.

He founded the performing arts group Swara Maharddhika and was involved in Guruh Gipsy, an influential musical collaboration that combined contemporary music with traditional Indonesian elements. His artistic work has spanned music, dance, choreography and major stage productions.

Guruh also had a lengthy political career, serving in the House of Representatives first under the Indonesian Democratic Party (PDI) and later the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P).

An official House profile records his parliamentary service beginning in 1992, followed by multiple terms after Indonesia's democratic transition, including the 2019-2024 term representing East Java VI.
