Le Bourget, France. Leonardo Veddriq won the first gold medal for Indonesia at the Paris Olympics on Thursday after he became the fastest in the sport climbing speed final.

US sport climber Sam Watson of the United States, who broke the world record during the elimination round and the third-place heat, ended the competition without the gold.

Leonardo made a time of 4.75 seconds in the final while China’s Wu Peng set 4.77 seconds for the silver medal.

Watson, who first set a world record of 4.79 seconds in April, lost to China in the semifinals before setting the record time of 4.74 seconds in the third-place heat to take home the bronze.

At the Paris Olympics, Watson first broke his own record with a time of 4.75 seconds in an elimination heat two days ago. 

Leonardo and Aleksandra Mirosław of Poland made history as the first gold medalists of the men's and women's sport climbing speed, which marked its inaugural event in the Olympics.

He also became the first Indonesian Olympic gold medalist in a sport other than badminton.
