KPK Arrests Ponorogo Regent in Alleged Job Rotation Bribery Case
Jakarta. The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) arrested Ponorogo Regent Sugiri Sancoko on Friday over alleged bribery linked to job rotations and promotions within the Ponorogo Regency Government in East Java.
KPK Deputy Chair Fitroh Rohcahyanto confirmed the arrest on Friday, saying the sting was centered on allegations of illicit payments in exchange for civil servant placement.
“Job rotations and promotions,” Fitroh said when asked about the focus of Friday’s operation.
Before he was taken into custody, Sugiri reportedly presided over a civil service reshuffle between 3 p.m. and 4 p.m. local time, which saw several officials reassigned within the Ponorogo administration.
KPK has taken Sugiri and other individuals into custody for questioning. The agency has 24 hours after an arrest to determine the legal status of those detained in a sting operation and to formally name suspects, outline the case construction, and announce their roles to the public.
The official residence of the Ponorogo Regent on Jalan Alun-alun Utara appeared deserted on Friday evening, with only journalists seen waiting outside for updates. The main entrance was tightly shut, in contrast to its usual open condition, and there was no visible activity inside.
The operation in Ponorogo comes days after KPK moved against another provincial leader.
On Monday, KPK arrested Riau Governor Abdul Wahid and several other individuals in a separate sting operation tied to alleged kickbacks in public infrastructure projects. Investigators said the Riau case involved repeated payments from an extortion scheme, and roughly Rp1.6 billion (about US$97,000) in cash was confiscated as evidence.
