Jakarta. President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo congratulated the national football team on Friday for achieving qualification from the group stage, marking the first time since their inaugural participation in the Asian Cup.

Having secured a spot as one of the four best third-placed teams, Indonesia is set to face Australia in the opening match of the knockout round in Qatar on Sunday.

In a video message, President Jokowi expressed his joy, saying, "Congratulations to the national team, which has made it to the last 16, and also to the PSSI (Indonesian Football Association) for making history in Indonesian football."

"Praise be to God! I believe Indonesian football is capable of achieving more through serious efforts and hard work," he added.

With four previous participations in the Asian Cup, Indonesia had never advanced beyond the group stage until this historic moment.

President Jokowi also conveyed his best wishes for the upcoming match against Australia at Jassim bin Hamad Stadium.

"Hopefully, we can secure points in the first match of the last 16 round against Australia,” he said.
