Jakarta. Heavy rainfall since the early hours of Thursday prompted flood alerts across Indonesia’s capital, with three key floodgates placed on alert status and major traffic arteries in West Jakarta brought to a standstill during the morning rush hour.

The Jakarta Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) said that as of 8 a.m. local time, three water control points — Manggarai BKB Floodgate, the Pesanggrahan monitoring post, and Pluit Reservoir — were at Alert Level 3, or “watch” status, indicating elevated flood risk.

At the Manggarai BKB Floodgate in East Jakarta, one of Jakarta’s most critical water control points, the water level reached 470 centimeters, up sharply from 400 centimeters an hour earlier. Authorities attributed the rise to persistent rainfall across Jakarta and upstream areas.

Water levels at the Pesanggrahan post in South Jakarta also increased to 155 centimeters, up from 140 centimeters at 7 a.m., while Pluit Reservoir recorded a rise to 195 centimeters, officially placing it on Alert Level 3. The status signals potential flooding in downstream areas if rainfall continues.

Several other monitoring points remained at normal to Alert Level 2 status, including Katulampa Weir in Bogor, which stood at 130 centimeters, and Karet Floodgate in Central Jakarta at 80 centimeters, according to BPBD data.

Residents living along riverbanks and in flood-prone areas were urged to remain vigilant and to follow official updates on weather conditions and floodgate status closely.

The rain caused congestion in West Jakarta. Traffic on Daan Mogot Road, a major arterial route linking Cengkareng and Grogol was paralyzed on Thursday morning as floodwaters inundated large sections of the roadway.

Flooding of up to 25 centimeters was reported on the main road, while water reaching 15 centimeters submerged parts of the Pesing Flyover, restricting vehicle movement.

Police confirmed congestion had spread across much of the Daan Mogot corridor and said officers were coordinating with the city’s water resources agency to deploy pumps to reduce flooding.
