Jakarta. Indonesia's National Police (Polri) has arrested Enyk Waldkoenig, 39, who was wanted for human trafficking related to internships (ferienjob) in Germany.

"Enyk Waldkoenig, the ferienjob suspect, was arrested by Italian authorities in coordination with Interpol and Polri on Wednesday," stated Krishna Murti, Chief of the International Relations Division, on Thursday.

Waldkoenig is currently being repatriated to Indonesia.

Previously, Polri issued a red notice for two fugitives involved in human trafficking for internships in Germany. Besides Waldkoenig, police are still searching for a woman known as A alias AE, aged 37.

According to police reports, Waldkoenig, director of the human resources company SHB, collaborated with the State University of Jakarta (UNJ) to organize internships for students in Germany.

Meanwhile, A introduced the internship program to universities and facilitated student applications for tourist visas to Germany.

Polri suspects that approximately 1,047 students from 33 universities fell victim to human trafficking in Germany under the guise of the ferienjob program.

"Ferienjob" refers to temporary work or internships undertaken by students during school or university holidays to gain experience or earn extra income.

Police investigations revealed that these students, predominantly studying electrical engineering, were employed as manual laborers performing physically demanding tasks.

The suspects face charges under human trafficking laws, which carry a maximum penalty of 15 years in prison and fines of up to Rp 600 million. They are also charged under laws protecting Indonesian migrant workers, with penalties of up to 10 years in prison and fines reaching Rp 15 billion.
