Indonesia’s Prabowo ‘Ready’ to Fly to Tehran as Mediator
Jakarta. President Prabowo Subianto is “ready” to fly to Tehran as a mediator, according to the Indonesian government, following US-Israel attacks against Iran.
Airstrikes struck Tehran on Saturday morning local time. US President Donald Trump confirmed that his country had undertaken a “massive and ongoing operation” to obliterate Iranian nuclear infrastructure. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also announced that his military had teamed up with Washington on this campaign. As tensions soar, Prabowo intends to facilitate truce talks.
“The Indonesian government — in this case, our president — expresses readiness to facilitate dialogue so the security situation will return to a conducive state. If accepted by both sides, the president is willing to head to Tehran for mediation,” a statement by the ministry reads.
The Jakarta Globe has reached out to the ministry to confirm if the mediation is also subject to Israel’s approval, or greenlights from the other two will suffice. The Globe asked whether the talks would involve all three warring countries in question.
Despite Iran’s demand for an “open condemnation” against the aggression, Indonesia’s statement put more emphasis on regret over how Washington-Tehran talks were unsuccessful. Their officials recently engaged in high-stakes nuclear talks in Geneva, but could not reach a deal.
“Indonesia deeply regrets the failure of the US-Iran negotiations, which have resulted in military escalation in the Middle East,” the statement reads, without making a direct mention of the nuclear facilities.
Southeast Asia’s biggest economy called on everyone to exercise restraint and prioritize dialogue. Jakarta underlined the importance of “resolving differences through peaceful means”.
This is not the first time for an Indonesian leader to volunteer as a mediator. Prabowo’s predecessor Joko “Jokowi” Widodo had also traveled to Russia and Ukraine back in mid-2022, just months after the war reached new heights. Indonesia is urging hundreds of its citizens currently residing in Iran to remain calm and follow instructions by local authorities.
