Semarang. The Semarang District Court on Friday sentenced former police officer  Robig Zaenudin to 15 years in prison for the fatal shooting of 17-year-old student Gamma Rizkynata Oktavandy.

Presiding Judge Mira Sendangsari found Robig guilty of violating Indonesia’s Child Protection Law, as well as provisions in the Criminal Code relating to murder and assault. In addition to the prison term, the court ordered him to pay a fine of 200 million rupiah (about US$12,300) or serve an additional month in jail if he fails to pay.

“The court sentences the defendant, Robig Zaenudin, to 15 years’ imprisonment. The period of arrest and detention already served shall be deducted from the sentence. The defendant will remain in custody,” Judge Mira said.

The court concluded that Robig used a standard-issue police revolver to fire on Gamma and his friends, killing the teenager and injuring two others on Nov. 24, 2024.

Aggravating factors included the victim’s death, injuries to additional victims, and damage to the reputation of the National Police.

A police reconstruction of the incident revealed that Robig, a narcotics officer with the Semarang Police at the time, was not under threat when he opened fire on the group in front of a convenience store in West Semarang.

The police initially claimed that Robig shot 17-year-old GRO and his friends to break up a brawl, but Central Java Police spokesperson Artanto confirmed that Robig’s actions constituted “excessive force” against the victims.

Robig was dismissed from the force following a police ethics hearing on Dec. 9, 2024.
