Indonesia Unveils New Red-and-White Passport Design
Jakarta. The Law and Human Rights Ministry, through the Directorate General of Immigration, unveiled a new passport design in celebration of Indonesia's 79th Independence Day. The new passport features a red and white color scheme, representing the national flag, replacing the previous greenish-blue cover.
Law and Human Rights Minister, Yasonna H. Laoly, emphasized that the new colors reflect Indonesia's identity and independence. The redesigned passport also incorporates 33 traditional Indonesian fabric motifs on each page.
Security enhancements were a primary focus, with the new design adhering to International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) standards. The updated features make the passport more resistant to forgery.
"The new design strengthens both personal and national identity, ensuring that when entering other countries, our passport is immediately recognized as Indonesian, with strong security features," Yasonna stated.
The new passports will be available starting August 17, 2025, after the existing stock is depleted. Yasonna also proposed a competition where the first 100 recipients of the new passports would receive them free of charge.
Director General of Immigration, Silmy Karim, explained that the delayed rollout is necessary to finalize printing, distribution, and system preparations. The new passport design is expected to enhance Indonesia's cultural representation and international standing.
Silmy said, the new passport design incorporates a combination of advanced security features, including a heat-resistant, flexible cover that protects the embedded chip. The biodata page is made from polycarbonate material with a coated surface for added durability.
The passport's pages are equipped with security elements sensitive to chemicals. The printing uses both visible fluorescent ink and invisible infrared ink, which glow under ultraviolet light. These inks are also utilized in the stitching threads of the passport, which feature three colors.
"The integration of these new security materials and printing technologies ensures that the passport is secure for international travel and facilitates easier authentication processes," he said.
