Indonesia Sets Eid al-Adha Holiday for May 27
Jakarta. The Indonesian government on Sunday officially designated May 27 as the date for this year’s Eid al-Adha holiday following a religious deliberation session involving Islamic scholars and clerics.
Eid al-Adha, one of the most important holidays in Islam, is also known as the Festival of Sacrifice. Muslims who are financially able traditionally sacrifice livestock such as cows or goats, with the meat distributed to poorer communities.
“It has been agreed that 10 Zulhijah, or Eid al-Adha, will fall on Wednesday, May 27, 2026,” Religious Affairs Minister Nasaruddin Umar said during the government’s Isbat meeting, or official moon-sighting and religious calendar session, in Jakarta.
Nasaruddin said the decision would serve as the official guideline for Indonesian Muslims in beginning the series of Zulhijah religious observances, including voluntary fasting ahead of Eid al-Adha, in a coordinated manner nationwide.
“We all hope this momentum can strengthen unity and togetherness among Muslims,” he said.
