Jakarta. Indonesia will move to evacuate its citizens from Tehran as Israeli and US military strikes in Iran continue, Foreign Minister Sugiono said Tuesday.

Sugiono said he had instructed Indonesia’s ambassador in Tehran to take immediate steps to facilitate evacuations for nationals who wish to leave.

“I have ordered our ambassador in Tehran to prepare immediate evacuation measures should any Indonesian citizens request to be evacuated,” he said at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta.

According to Sugiono, 15 Indonesian nationals in Tehran have expressed their willingness to be evacuated. However, the relocation cannot proceed immediately due to airspace closures triggered by the ongoing conflict.

Authorities are arranging the timing and logistics of the operation, which is expected to proceed overland via Baku, Azerbaijan — a journey of roughly 10 hours by road from Tehran.

“This is being arranged, as the airspace is closed. Evacuation can be conducted via Baku, which requires a 10-hour land journey from Tehran. Logistics must be calculated, and the health conditions of evacuees must be assessed. So it cannot be carried out today,” Sugiono said.

He stressed that not all Indonesians in conflict-affected areas have chosen to return home. The government will facilitate evacuation only for those who voluntarily request repatriation.

Indonesian nationals in Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, and Bahrain have not submitted evacuation requests, he added, indicating that the situation outside Iran remains stable for now.
