Heavy Rains Trigger Deadly Floods Across Bali, Two Reported Dead
Jakarta. Heavy rains triggered severe flooding across Bali’s Jembrana Regency and Denpasar this Wednesday early morning, leaving two people dead and forcing residents to flee their homes.
Authorities confirmed the victims as 23-year-old Nita Kumala, a pregnant resident of Pengambengan village, and 38-year-old I Komang Oka Sudiastawa from Dangin Tukadaya village.
Nita, who was two months pregnant, was swept away by strong currents while riding a motorcycle with her husband, Bilal Ramdhan, in the early hours of Wednesday. Bilal managed to escape, but Nita was found dead later that morning in a swamp near the site of the incident.
Meanwhile, I Komang Oka drowned late Tuesday after reportedly slipping while inspecting floodwaters around his home, which had risen to waist level. His nephew told local media that he likely hit his head before being swept under.
Relentless rainfall since Tuesday has submerged large parts of Jembrana, including the Denpasar-Gilimanuk highway, causing hours-long traffic gridlock.
Flooding also struck Denpasar early Wednesday as the Badung River overflowed, swamping homes in Wanasari, North Denpasar. Residents were jolted awake when water surged as high as rooftops around 1:30 AM Bali time.
“I was shocked when the water came into my house and goat pen. We tried to save our belongings, but most furniture was destroyed,” said Hajah Husnah, a local trader. “Thankfully, our livestock survived.”
Heavy downpours have continued to drench Bali since Monday night, and authorities are urging residents in low-lying areas to remain on alert.
