Think You Can Handle Bali’s Roads? Police Say Think Again
Jakarta. Police are urging foreign visitors who are not confident on motorbikes to avoid riding alone as the island intensifies traffic safety measures during the ongoing Zebra Agung 2025 operation.
The warning comes as motorbike rentals remain one of the most common ways for tourists to get around Bali, often without any requirement to show a motorcycle license before renting.
Authorities say many visitors lack basic riding skills, often seen wobbling through traffic, skipping helmets, or driving recklessly, behaviors that risk their own safety and that of other road users.
Local rental operators in tourist hubs such as Kuta, Canggu, and Ubud have also observed that many visitors are unfamiliar with Bali’s traffic patterns and road conditions. Narrow village roads, uneven surfaces, and sudden weather shifts often surprise newcomers. Several operators say they now provide more detailed briefings to renters and increasingly recommend hiring a motorist or riding companion for tourists who appear inexperienced.
Bali Traffic Police Director Turmudi said officers are providing extra education for both tourists and locals, emphasizing proper road etiquette. He encouraged inexperienced tourists to use a motorist service or riding companion instead of going solo, saying the approach helps protect residents, visitors, and rental providers.
The two-week Zebra Agung 2025 operation deploys 1,067 police personnel focusing on improving road safety, public order, and smooth traffic flow, including for foreign visitors. Authorities hope the increased outreach helps reduce violations and accidents involving tourists.
