Paris. Indonesian women's singles badminton player Gregoria Mariska Tunjung has advanced to the Round of 16 at the Paris 2024 Olympics as the winner of Group G, following in the footsteps of the men's doubles team Fajar Alfian and Muhammad Rian Ardianto.

However, Indonesia will have no representatives in the men's singles Round of 16 at the Paris 2024 Olympics. Both Jonatan "Jojo" Christie and Anthony Sinisuka Ginting were eliminated in the group stage.

Gregoria secured her spot in the Round of 16 after defeating Czech player Tereza Svabikova 21-12, 21-18 at Porte De La Chapelle Arena on Wednesday, July 31, 2024.

The men's doubles team Fajar Alfian and Muhammad Rian Ardianto have already secured their place in the quarterfinals. They are set to face the top-seeded pair, Liang Wei Keng and Wang Chang from China.

“I am happy to win and advance to the Round of 16, but honestly, I am not satisfied with my game. I want to play better and improve in the upcoming matches,” Gregoria said on Wednesday.

Gregoria admitted feeling pressured by the results of the men's singles match, in which Jonatan lost. “Jonatan's result put some pressure on me, but I tried not to think about it too much,” she added.

Earlier, Jonatan lost in straight games to India's Lakshya Sen with scores of 18-21, 12-21 in Group L.

“I believe all my senior teammates have given their best effort and preparation. My appreciation goes out to all of them,” said Gregoria.

In their decisive group stage matches, Jonatan was defeated by Lakshya Sen 18-21, 12-21, while Ginting lost to France's Toma Junior Popov in three games, 19-21, 21-17, 15-21.

The elimination of Indonesia's men's singles players is particularly disappointing as this category was expected to continue the country's Olympic gold tradition. Jonatan and Ginting, who met in the All England 2024 final, had been showing positive form in this year's BWF tournaments.

Their losses mean that the achievement of Indonesian badminton legend Taufik Hidayat, who won gold at the 2004 Athens Olympics, remains unmatched. Taufik defeated South Korea's Shon Seung-mo in the final.

Before Taufik, Indonesia also won gold in men's singles at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics through Alan Budi Kusuma, who defeated fellow Indonesian Ardy Wiranata in the final.

After Taufik, Indonesia's best achievements in men's singles were bronze medals won by Sony Dwi Kuncoro at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and Anthony Sinisuka Ginting at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

In addition to men's singles, Indonesia's women's doubles pair Apriyani Rahayu and Siti Fadia Silva Ramadhanti, and mixed doubles pair Rinov Rivaldy and Pitha Haningtyas Mentari, have also exited the Paris 2024 Olympics.

Since Susi Susanti won gold at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, Indonesia has only failed to win a badminton gold once, at the 2012 London Olympics, where the country did not secure any medals in badminton.
