Govt Pledges Increased Funding After Climbers Sweep World Cup Golds in Europe
Jakarta. Indonesia has pledged additional funding to support its national sport climbing team after the country's athletes captured multiple gold medals at the 2026 IFSC World Cup events in Krakow, Poland, and Chamonix, France.
The athletes were welcomed home at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport on Tuesday by Surono, Deputy for Sports Performance Improvement at the Youth and Sports Ministry, and national speed climbing coach Galar Pandu Asmoro.
The standout performer was Desak Made Rita Kusuma Dewi, who won women's speed gold at both the Krakow and Chamonix World Cup events. In the Chamonix final, she defeated Italy's Giulia Randi with a time of 6.22 seconds, compared with Randi's 6.51 seconds.
In the men's competition, Veddriq Leonardo claimed the speed title in Chamonix after defeating fellow Indonesian Antasyafi Robby Al Hilmi in an all-Indonesian final. Veddriq clocked 4.89 seconds to secure gold, while Robby finished in 5.11 seconds to take silver, underscoring Indonesia's dominance in the discipline.
Speaking at the airport, Surono congratulated the athletes on their achievements and announced that President Prabowo Subianto had committed to increasing government funding to strengthen Indonesia's elite sports programs.
He said the additional budget would support national training camps and overseas competitions as Indonesia prepares for the 2026 Asian Games in Japan, the 2027 Southeast Asian Games in Malaysia, and the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
"The president is committed to supporting Indonesian sports by providing additional funding to prepare our athletes for the Asian Games, SEA Games, and the Olympics," Surono said.
Veddriq described the victory in France as especially meaningful, saying it marked his first World Cup gold medal since winning Olympic gold.
"I am very grateful. This is my first gold medal since the Olympics. Thank you for all the support," he said, expressing appreciation for the government's continued backing of Indonesian athletes.
Desak also credited sustained support from President Prabowo Subianto and the Youth and Sports Ministry for helping athletes maintain their competitiveness through centralized training and international competitions.
Indonesia has emerged as one of the world's leading nations in speed climbing in recent years, consistently producing world-class athletes and winning medals at major international events, including the Olympics and IFSC World Cup circuit.
