Foreign Woman Among 14 Dead as Bali Floods Recede
Denpasar. Rescuers in Bali retrieved five more bodies on Thursday as floodwaters receded, raising the death toll on the resort island to 14, while two residents remain missing.
Days of torrential rain beginning Monday triggered flash floods and landslides across nine districts and cities in Bali, sweeping away people, homes, and hundreds of kiosks in traditional markets. At least 120 neighborhoods were submerged and a dozen landslides were reported, according to the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB).
Among the victims, one body recovered was that of a foreign woman found near Taman Pancing in Denpasar. Authorities said her nationality has not yet been confirmed.
As rivers returned to normal levels, residents in Denpasar left packed emergency shelters to find streets buried in mud and debris. Cars were overturned, narrow alleys clogged with wreckage, and sidewalks littered with sandals, pots, pans, and family photographs. Authorities began clearing roads, restoring electricity, and removing piles of water-soaked garbage.
BNPB chief Suharyanto said the immediate threat of further flooding in Bali has passed, but search efforts continue with about 600 rescue workers, soldiers, and police deployed across affected areas.
More than 560 people remain in temporary shelters, while infrastructure damage includes washed-out roads, bridges, and public facilities. The floods have also devastated small businesses, with nearly 500 kiosks and shops destroyed in local markets.
Seasonal rains frequently cause floods and landslides across Indonesia from September to March, but this week’s deluge was intensified by the equatorial Rossby wave, which stalled over Bali before shifting toward Java.
In East Nusa Tenggara province, the same weather system caused flash floods and landslides that left at least six people dead and four others missing. Rescuers are still combing through mud and rubble in remote villages where flooding also destroyed bridges, farmland, and livestock.
