Jakarta. Foreign Minister Sugiono on Thursday defended President Prabowo Subianto’s latest visit to France -- his third trip to the country this year -- saying the visit was made in response to a direct invitation from French President Emmanuel Macron.

Sugiono said the invitation had originally been extended several months ago but was postponed because of scheduling conflicts.

“This visit is to fulfill an invitation from President Macron that had previously been delayed. The earlier invitation was for April, but the timing did not match at that time,” Sugiono said in a video statement.

According to the foreign minister, after the initial invitation could not be accommodated, Macron extended a second invitation to Prabowo, which the Indonesian president fulfilled this week.

Sugiono added that the Paris trip also served as a reciprocal visit following Macron’s visit to Indonesia on May 27, 2025.

Prabowo previously visited France on Jan. 23 after attending the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting in Davos, Switzerland.

He returned to France again on April 14 after a trip to Russia, where he met President Vladimir Putin.
