Flash Floods and Landslides Claim 23 Lives in West Sumatra
Pesisir Selatan. As of Monday afternoon, the toll of casualties resulting from the flash floods and landslides in Pessel, Pesisir Selatan Regency, West Sumatra, has reached 23, with six individuals still unaccounted for.
A joint effort by the National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas), the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI), and the National Police (Polri) persists in the ongoing search for victims at three specific locations where casualties are presumed to be still trapped after the flash floods and landslides in the area.
These three identified locations are Koto 11 Tarusan Subdistrict, the Api-Api Area in Bayang Subdistrict, and the Langgai area in Sutera Subdistrict. Teams from Basarnas Jambi and Bengkulu provinces are actively participating in the mission alongside Basarnas Padang.
Abdul Malik, the Head of the SAR Office in Padang, reported, "The flood and landslide disaster occurred in three sectors in Sutera Subdistrict. There are 23 confirmed fatalities, with 6 individuals still being searched for – three in Sutera Subdistrict, two in Tarusan, and one in Bayang Subdistrict."
Since last Thursday, flash floods and landslides have devastated Pesisir Selatan Regency, resulting in dozens of casualties and affecting over 70,000 residents. Among the 12 affected regencies, five have suffered severe damage, with Pesisir Selatan Regency facing the most critical situation.
Currently, the West Sumatra Trans-Sumatra Highway from Bengkulu to Painan through Padang has been reopened for four-wheeled vehicles.
"The cleanup and restoration of connectivity on the Padang-Painan Highway in Pesisir Selatan Regency, West Sumatra – which was paralyzed due to the floods last week – are targeted to be completed and returned to normal within two weeks," announced Minister of Public Works and Public Housing Basuki Hadimuljono. He made this statement while accompanied by West Sumatra Governor Mahyeldi Ansharullah and Pesisir Selatan Regency Head Rusma Yul Anwar during their inspection on Monday.
