China’s Wang Yi to Visit Jakarta This Week for Security Talks
Jakarta. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi is set to visit Jakarta this week for regional security talks, among others, according to the Indonesian government.
Wang will have the first edition of the so-called bilateral “comprehensive strategic dialogue” with Indonesian counterpart Sugiono on Friday. The discussions aim to identify what both countries have achieved so far, while identifying the priorities for the years to come.
They will also engage in a “2+2 format” that same day. Defense Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin and his Chinese counterpart Dong Jun are expected to join the talks.
“The 2+2 will focus on strengthening cooperation in the political, defense, and security spheres at the bilateral, regional, and global levels,” a statement by the Foreign Ministry reads.
Indonesia and China recently made global headlines for holding a naval exercise in waters off Taiwan’s east coast.
Amid Taiwan’s panic over the naval drills, Navy spokesman Tunggul told the Jakarta Globe at the time that these were only passing exercises, and not meant for “war-fighting”. He framed it as “maritime diplomacy”.
Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Yvonne Mewengkang also said that Jakarta had not received any formal complaint from Taiwan, despite reports that Taiwan was seeking clarification.
