Bali Airport Boosts Health Checks Over Super Flu Threat
Denpasar. Bali’s I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport has reactivated temperature screening systems to prevent the potential entry of passengers infected with so-called “super flu,” identified as influenza A (H3N2) subclade K, airport authorities said Tuesday.
The airport has installed thermo scanners at key arrival and departure points, using equipment that was first deployed during the Covid-19 pandemic. Officials say the devices are being reused because the symptoms of the virus, particularly fever, are similar to those of common influenza.
“As an international gateway with a large volume of passengers, we assess that the symptoms we have studied are relatively similar to regular flu,” Nugroho Jati, general manager of I Gusti Ngurah Rai Airport, said . “Detection through body temperature is easier when a passenger has a high fever.”
Nugroho said around 25 thermo scanners have been installed and are fully operational. The devices are positioned along major passenger routes, covering both international and domestic arrivals and departures.
“The temperature scanners used during the Covid-19 pandemic can now be utilized again, and they have already been installed,” he said.
The airport serves an average of about 66,000 passengers per day. So far, no passengers have been identified as suspected super flu cases, Nugroho said.
Despite the absence of confirmed cases at the airport, authorities have stepped up vigilance by conducting comprehensive temperature screening, deploying additional personnel and preparing medical facilities if needed.
Airport management is coordinating closely with the Health Ministry, the Indonesian Quarantine Agency and the Port Health Office to monitor developments and determine further response measures.
“At this stage, the situation remains stable and preventive in nature. There are no special protocols in place yet, only advisories to remain vigilant,” Nugroho said.
According to data from the Health Ministry, Indonesia had recorded 62 cases of the super flu as of the end of December 2025. The cases were spread across eight provinces, with the highest numbers reported in East Java, South Kalimantan and West Java.
