Denpasar. An Australian man died while being held at an immigration detention facility in Bali as he awaited deportation for an alleged immigration violation, Indonesian authorities said on Saturday.

The 39-year-old man, identified only by the initials CJMH, was found unconscious in a restroom at the Ngurah Rai Immigration Office's detention facility on July 10 after being detained for overstaying or otherwise violating the conditions of his stay in Indonesia.

According to the Ngurah Rai Immigration Office, officials began investigating the case after receiving a report of a suspected immigration violation. Following a series of interviews and summonses dating back to late March, authorities concluded that CJMH had violated Indonesia's immigration regulations.

The immigration office said he had been given multiple opportunities to resolve his immigration status voluntarily but failed to respond to official summonses.

Immigration officers took him into custody at his residence in Jimbaran, South Kuta, on Friday before placing him in detention pending deportation.

Later that day, officers conducting routine monitoring noticed through closed-circuit television that CJMH had remained inside the restroom for an unusually long period.

Officers entered the restroom and found him unconscious.

Officials said they immediately checked for vital signs, administered oxygen, and requested an ambulance from a nearby hospital.

Medical personnel provided emergency treatment before transporting CJMH to Bali Jimbaran General Hospital. He was pronounced dead while en route to the hospital.

Hospital officials' preliminary assessment suggested a possible heart attack, although authorities stressed that the exact cause of death has not yet been determined.

Following the incident, the Ngurah Rai Immigration Office notified police, who conducted a crime scene examination at the detention facility.

Immigration officials said the investigation into the cause of death is being handled by the police in coordination with the hospital.

“Our officers followed standard monitoring procedures, and once the irregularity was detected through CCTV, they immediately responded and provided first aid,” Ngurah Rai Immigration Office chief Bugie Kurniawan said.

Bugie said the immigration office would continue cooperating with the police, the hospital, and representatives of the Australian government until the investigation is completed in accordance with Indonesian law.
