Army Arsenal Explodes and Ignites Massive Blaze
Jakarta. An army arsenal in Bogor erupted in a powerful explosion and was engulfed in flames for hours on Saturday evening, though thankfully, no injuries were reported, according to a senior military officer.
Situated in the Gunung Putri district, near the municipal border with Bekasi, approximately 70 kilometers east of Jakarta, the arsenal primarily housed expired munitions, according to Major General Mohamad Hasan, the commander of the Great Jakarta Military Command.
Efforts to extinguish the fire faced challenges due to the ongoing risk of further explosions, Hasan said.
"We are currently waiting for the next two hours before attempting to enter the location, as we cannot afford to take any risks of additional explosions," Hasan said in Bogor.
He further revealed that the arsenal contained approximately "160,000 munitions of small and medium calibers."
To ensure public safety, joint security teams comprising military and police personnel have cordoned off the area within a radius of 500 meters to 1 kilometer, preventing unauthorized access, he added.
"At approximately 6:05 this evening, smoke was detected emanating from warehouse number 6, indicating the likelihood of imminent explosions. Our personnel promptly alerted residents in the surrounding areas about the potential danger," Hasan explained.
"Thus far, there have been no reports of casualties within the perimeter. However, due to safety concerns, we have been unable to access the site directly."
